About Down Yonder Farm Music Hall
In 1991, Peter Kramer built a music building on the farm near Hillsborough which he shares with his wife Susan and two children. Intended originally to serve as the practice space for The Flashbacks, his band at the time, the building has gone on to host a colorful assortment of other musicians and artists. The building has been the practice space for Mel Melton and the Wicked Mojos, Lise Uyanik and the Mobile City Band, several Elvis tribute acts, and younger bands such as My Dear Ella and Weapons of Mass Distraction.
For years, the Doc Branch Band featuring the Terry Brothers served as the house band for small square dances. House concerts have featured Hooverville, the Kruger Brothers, Jack and Patty LeSueur and Cedar Creek, and Claire Holley.
Individuals who who have performed or practiced there include Cool John Ferguson, Harvey Arnold of Southern rock and blues note, Katherine Whalen, Clarence Clemmons (while living in Durham getting ready for a Springsteen/E Street Band tour), Eric Darling (he wrote "Walk Right In"), cousins Joe and Odell Thompson (internationally known black string musicians from Orange County), poet Dasan Ahanu, Alice Gerrard, and Jim Watson, an original Red Clay Rambler. Southern authors who have attended functions in the building include Clyde Edgerton, Lee Smith, Tim McLaurin, Larry Brown, and Annie Dillard. Photos on the walls, some with autographs (e.g., Levon Helm, Ike Turner, Ralph Stanley, James Brown's band, Dickie Betts, Johnny Otis), reflect the kinds of music that have been heard there.
